The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars.
The move signals a decisive effort to stabilise the team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz Replaces Otto Addo After Poor Results
Queiroz takes over following the dismissal of Otto Addo in late March, just weeks before the tournament.
Addo, who was in his second stint as head coach, was relieved of his duties after a series of disappointing results, including:
- A 5–1 defeat to Austria
- A 2–1 loss to Germany
Despite guiding Ghana to World Cup qualification, his tenure ended with eight wins and nine defeats in 22 matches, raising concerns over consistency.
GFA Confirms Appointment
Announcing the decision, the GFA said:
“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.”
Queiroz Brings Vast International Experience
The 73-year-old coach arrives with extensive international experience, having managed several national teams, including:
- Portugal
- Iran
- Egypt
- Colombia
- South Africa
- Oman
He has led multiple teams to the World Cup, including:
- South Africa (2002)
- Portugal (2010)
- Iran (2014, 2018, 2022)
At club level, Queiroz also managed Real Madrid and served as assistant coach at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Immediate Focus on World Cup Preparation
Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately, with his primary task being to prepare Ghana for a challenging World Cup campaign.
The Black Stars have been drawn in a tough group alongside:
- England
- Croatia
- Panama
With limited time before the tournament, the new coach is expected to bring tactical discipline, structure, and experience to the team.
High Expectations for Black Stars
The appointment reflects the GFA’s intent to improve performance and ensure Ghana makes a strong impression on the global stage.
