A meeting of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Council to appoint a new Vice Chancellor was abruptly disrupted by unidentified men on Monday, April 13, 2026.
According to reports by JoyNews, the Council had shortlisted three candidates and was preparing to make a final decision when the incident occurred.
Armed Men Interrupt Proceedings
A source familiar with the meeting said the men entered the venue in the afternoon and prevented the Council from proceeding with the appointment process.
The source indicated that two of the individuals were carrying pistols, raising serious concerns about security at the meeting.
“They walked to the chairman, who later placed a call to someone we do not know, and the meeting was brought to an abrupt end,” the source said.
Security Concerns Raised
The incident has raised questions about how the individuals gained access to the meeting and became aware of its location.
The source also expressed concern about the apparent absence of adequate security at such a high-level meeting.
Repeat of 2021 Incident
This is not the first time the Vice Chancellor appointment process at UDS has been disrupted. A similar incident was reported in 2021 during the same process.
The recurrence has sparked calls for stronger security measures to protect the integrity of university governance processes.
Concerns Over Institutional Processes
Observers say the disruption could undermine confidence in the University’s leadership selection process if urgent steps are not taken to address security lapses.
