The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, with the results of more than 8,000 candidates cancelled over examination irregularities.
In a statement dated September 4, 2026, WAEC said the results have been made available to heads of schools, while candidates can also access their results through the Council’s official website.
A total of 512,862 candidates, comprising 225,270 males and 287,592 females from 1,022 schools, registered for the examination. This represents an 11.07 per cent increase over the 461,736 candidates registered in 2025.
WAEC said 5,049 candidates, representing 0.98 per cent of the total number registered, were absent from the examination.
Over 8,000 results cancelled
Following investigations into reported examination irregularities, the Ghana Examinations Committee approved the cancellation of subject results of 7,434 candidates for taking foreign materials, including prepared notes, textbooks and printed materials, into examination halls.
The entire results of another 861 candidates were cancelled for possessing mobile phones in examination halls.
WAEC also withheld the subject results of 957 candidates and the entire results of another 270 candidates over various suspected offences.
In addition, subject results of candidates from 169 schools have been withheld over alleged collusion. WAEC said investigations into those cases are ongoing, with the affected results expected to be either released or cancelled depending on the outcome of investigations by October 30, 2026.
English performance declines again
WAEC’s four-year performance statistics also show a continued decline in candidates’ performance in English Language.
The percentage of candidates obtaining grades A1 to C6 in English Language fell from 73.11 per cent in 2023 to 69.52 per cent in 2024, 69.00 per cent in 2025 and 62.40 per cent in 2026.
Performance in the other three core subjects improved compared with 2025.
In Core Mathematics, 60.75 per cent obtained A1 to C6, up from 48.73 per cent in 2025, while Integrated Science improved from 57.74 per cent to 62.08 per cent.
Social Studies recorded the strongest performance among the four core subjects, with 78.04 per cent obtaining A1 to C6, a significant rise from 55.82 per cent in 2025.
For the 2026 examination, 315,094 candidates obtained A1 to C6 in English Language, 306,234 in Core Mathematics, 309,605 in Integrated Science and 393,918 in Social Studies.
WAEC cautioned candidates and the public against fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee, stressing that its results are secured and can be authenticated through its verification system.
Candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld have also been directed to WAEC’s examination irregularities platform to check the reasons for the decision and, where applicable, information on the next course of action.
