The Ministry of Education has established a three-member committee to investigate allegations made by the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana against the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The move follows UTAG’s recent call for the dismissal of the GTEC Director-General and his deputies over what it described as regulatory overreach in the tertiary education sector.
In a statement dated April 13, the Ministry said the committee has been tasked to examine the concerns raised by UTAG and make recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama.
The committee is chaired by the Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Apaak, with Prof. George K.T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Ministry, and Prof. Mahama Duwiejua, Board Chairman of GTEC, as members.
The Ministry said the decision is intended to ensure an informed and balanced approach to resolving the issues raised by the university teachers.
It also called on all stakeholders to cooperate fully with the committee as it carries out its work.
UTAG had earlier accused GTEC leadership of interfering in university governance, including appointments and accreditation processes, and demanded their removal to restore confidence in the sector.
The Ministry, however, indicated its commitment to dialogue and resolving the matter in the best interest of tertiary education in Ghana.
The development signals a shift from confrontation to institutional review, as government moves to address growing tensions between university authorities and the sector regulator.
