A Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, who was reported missing earlier this week, has been found dead at the Hatchland Beach area near Duakor in Cape Coast.
The University, in a statement issued on Sunday, June 14, said police recovered the body after residents reported that it had been washed ashore along the beach on Friday, June 12.
According to the UCC District Police Commander, ASP Abdul Abubakar, officers proceeded to the scene after receiving the report at about 6:00 a.m. and transported the body to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary for preservation and identification.
Police said preliminary examination of the body revealed no visible signs of physical injury.
Investigators later received information suggesting that the deceased was a student of UCC. Her identity was subsequently confirmed as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student, after her roommate reported her disappearance and assisted police with identification.
According to the roommate, Innocentia was last seen at about 7:00 p.m. two days before her body was discovered. She reportedly received a phone call, dressed casually, and left their private hostel room at Amamoma but did not return.
Friends and colleagues reportedly made efforts to trace her whereabouts after becoming concerned about her absence, but those attempts were unsuccessful.
The student’s family later visited the mortuary and formally identified the body.
Police have indicated that a coroner’s order has been obtained to facilitate a post-mortem examination, which is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the incident while investigations continue.
The University of Cape Coast said it is providing support to the bereaved family, the deceased student’s roommate, course mates, and the wider university community during the difficult period.
