Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) has eliminated defending champions Mfantsipim School from the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) after securing a commanding victory in their quarter-final contest.
The eight-time champions finished the contest with 56 points, ahead of Mfantsipim School on 39 points and Presby SHS, Bompata, on 24 points, to book a place in the semi-finals.
The result also ended Mfantsipim’s hopes of winning a third consecutive NSMQ title in the year the school is marking its 150th anniversary.
For PRESEC, the victory carried additional significance after Mfantsipim knocked them out of the competition at the semi-final stage in 2024.
PRESEC took control of Monday’s contest from the opening round, finishing with 23 points, while Mfantsipim followed with 19 and Presby SHS, Bompata, with 13.
The Legon-based school maintained its lead after the Speed Race, moving to 29 points. Mfantsipim had 22 points, while Bompata stood at 11.
By the end of Round Three, PRESEC had extended its advantage to 37 points, with Mfantsipim remaining on 22 and Bompata on 11.
PRESEC further strengthened its position in Round Four, increasing its tally to 53 points. Mfantsipim improved to 32 points, while Bompata moved to 21.
Mfantsipim attempted a late recovery in the final round, but it was not enough to overturn PRESEC’s lead.
At the end of the contest, PRESEC emerged victorious with 56 points, Mfantsipim finished with 39, while Presby SHS, Bompata, ended its campaign with 24 points.
The victory keeps PRESEC’s quest for a record-extending ninth NSMQ title alive as the school advances to the semi-finals.
PRESEC and Mfantsipim renew rivalry
The latest result adds another chapter to the recent NSMQ rivalry between PRESEC and Mfantsipim.
Since 2016, the two schools have met four times in high-stakes knockout contests, with the latest victory leaving them with two wins each in those encounters.
Mfantsipim defeated PRESEC in the 2018 quarter-finals before PRESEC prevailed in their 2023 semi-final encounter.
In 2024, Mfantsipim turned the tables, eliminating PRESEC from the semi-finals following a closely fought contest that went to a tie-breaker. Mfantsipim subsequently went on to win the competition.
Two years later, PRESEC has returned the favour, ending Mfantsipim’s title defence at the quarter-final stage and advancing to the semi-finals.
