Former contestants of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) are continuing to make Ghana proud, recording outstanding academic achievements at some of the world’s leading universities and reaffirming the competition’s reputation as a breeding ground for excellence.
The latest success stories span institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, and Academic City University, where former contestants have graduated with top honours and distinguished awards.
Among the standout achievers is Akorfa Dagadu, a member of the Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) team that reached the semi-finals of the 2019 NSMQ.
Akorfa graduated from MIT with a degree in Chemical-Biological Engineering and was named the Most Outstanding Chemical Engineering Student in Boston by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The prestigious recognition honours exceptional academic achievement and excellence in chemical engineering.
Another former NSMQ star, Prince Debrah Jr., who represented Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC) in the 2021 competition, has also graduated from MIT with a degree in Computer Science.
His achievement adds to the growing list of Ghanaian students excelling at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions for science, technology, engineering, and innovation.
Back home, Setornam Koku Dedey, who represented St. Peter’s Senior High School in the 2022 NSMQ, emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student at Academic City University.
He graduated with a perfect 4.0 CGPA and an overall average score of 91.91 per cent in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, making him one of the institution’s most outstanding graduates in recent years.
The achievements come shortly after Francisca Lamini, the celebrated KETASCO contestant who rose to national prominence during the 2021 NSMQ, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harvard University with a pre-med degree.
The Summa Cum Laude distinction is Harvard University’s highest academic honour and is reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional academic excellence.
Francisca’s achievement attracted widespread praise across Ghana and beyond, inspiring many young people, particularly girls, to pursue careers in science and medicine.
The success of these former contestants highlights the lasting impact of the National Science and Maths Quiz in nurturing talent, promoting academic excellence, and inspiring students to pursue ambitious educational goals.
While the competition is renowned for testing scientific knowledge and analytical thinking, the accomplishments of its alumni demonstrate that the NSMQ experience extends far beyond the quiz stage, producing graduates who continue to excel in higher education and contribute to global scholarship and innovation.
As these young achievers embark on the next phase of their academic and professional journeys, they continue to serve as role models for students across Ghana, proving that dedication, hard work, and excellence can open doors to the world’s top universities and opportunities.
