The University of Cape Coast (UCC) says it is providing support to the family, roommate, course mates, and colleagues of a Level 200 student whose body was recently discovered at Hatchland Beach near Cape Coast.
The student, identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student, was found dead after being reported missing earlier in the week.
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 14, UCC said management had been fully informed of the incident and was taking steps to support those affected by the tragedy.
“The University Management has been duly informed, and appropriate support measures are being extended to the family, the affected roommate, colleague students and course mates during this difficult period,” the statement said.
According to the University, police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death are ongoing.
The UCC District Police Command indicated that the student’s body was discovered after residents of the Duakor community reported that it had been washed ashore along the beach on Friday, June 12.
Following preliminary examination, police reported that there were no visible signs of physical injury on the body. The remains were subsequently conveyed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary pending further investigations.
The University said Innocentia’s identity was confirmed after her roommate reported her disappearance and assisted police with identification.
The roommate reportedly told investigators that the student was last seen at about 7:00 p.m. after receiving a phone call and leaving their private hostel at Amamoma. Efforts by friends and colleagues to trace her whereabouts after she failed to return were unsuccessful.
Police have since secured a coroner’s order to conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, UCC and the police have appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unverified information about the case, warning that speculation could interfere with ongoing investigations and cause additional distress to the bereaved family and the university community.
The death has cast a sombre mood over the university, with students and staff mourning the loss of a colleague while awaiting answers from the ongoing investigation.
