Public transport fares across the country will increase by 20 per cent from Tuesday, June 2, 2026, following an announcement by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport operators.
The increase will affect trotro, shared taxis and inter-city transport.
The operators said the adjustment was necessary because of the continued rise in fuel prices and the cost of spare parts, including tyres, batteries and engine oil.
GPRTU Deputy PRO, Samuel Amoah, said drivers and vehicle owners are under pressure and can no longer continue without a fare review.
“This increment should have come long ago… if we don’t come up with this increment, it will disturb the work. Even the drivers are complaining seriously,” he said.
The union said new fare charts will be displayed at transport terminals, while task forces working with the Police MTTD will monitor compliance and sanction overcharging.
The operators also appealed to government to reduce taxes on spare parts and help stabilise fuel prices.
