A Ghanaian PhD student, Jacob Abaare, has received the Student Luminary Award at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in recognition of his academic excellence, leadership and service.
The award is given to students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship and make a strong impact through leadership and community engagement.

Academic Journey from Ghana to the United States
Jacob Abaare, who previously studied at St. Charles Minor Seminary in Tamale and the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), is currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Leadership Roles at University Level
At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he holds several leadership positions, including President of the National Society of Black Engineers and President of the International Society for Optics and Photonics.
He also serves as Vice President of the Fellowship of African Christian Students and is a member of both the Graduate Student Advisory Board and the Student Advisory Board of the PRAIRIE Initiative, which focuses on responsible artificial intelligence.
Community Service and STEM Advocacy
Beyond academics, Jacob Abaare is actively involved in community service. He volunteers in STEM education at the Malone Community Centre in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he supports young learners in science and technology.
He was also selected to represent students at a Google public sector panel during the university’s Husker AI Week, where he shared insights on the future of artificial intelligence in higher education and the importance of responsible use.
Achievements in Ghana and Beyond
His academic journey includes being selected as one of 60 scholars across Africa for the NUTM Scholars Programme in Lagos, Nigeria.
While at UMaT, he served as President of the Graduate Students Association and was a member of the University Council. He also received the Best Graduate Research Award at the 7th Ghana Mining Industry Awards.
