The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that government has approved the payment of salary arrears to eligible staff, including teachers recruited under the 2024 financial clearance.
In a directive issued to regional directors, GES said the approval was granted by the Ministry of Finance, with payments to be processed by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.
Arrears to Be Paid in Instalments
The arrears cover the period from August 1, 2024, to November 2025.
According to GES, payments will be made in instalments starting in May 2026, with each tranche covering four months of arrears. The payments are expected to continue through June, July and August.
GES has directed regional directors to inform heads of schools to ensure that affected staff are aware of the payment plan.

Background to Delayed Payments
The affected teachers were recruited following government’s 2024 financial clearance to address staffing shortages in schools across the country.
However, delays in salary payments led to the accumulation of arrears, causing frustration among the teachers.
Protests Over Unpaid Salaries
Last week, some of the affected teachers embarked on a demonstration to demand payment of the arrears owed them, drawing public attention to the issue.
Relief for Affected Teachers
The latest approval is expected to bring relief to the teachers and help restore confidence in the management of recruitment and compensation within the education sector.
