The Anlo Senior High School Old Students Association (ANSSOSA) has formally petitioned the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Primetime Limited over the conduct and outcome of the school’s controversial 1/8th-stage contest in the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
In a press release dated August 27, 2026, ANSSOSA said the petition was submitted to the Director-General of GES and the Director-General of Primetime Limited, organisers of the NSMQ, following concerns arising from the contest involving Anlo SHS, St. Augustine’s College and Kumasi High School.
According to the Association, the petition is seeking intervention and a fair review of the circumstances surrounding the contest.
“The petition seeks appropriate intervention and a fair review of the circumstances surrounding the contest, in the interest of justice, fairness and the integrity of the competition,” the statement said.
The action follows the dramatic end to the contest after contestants of Anlo SHS and Kumasi High School walked off the stage following a disagreement over the handling of a disputed Biology question.
The controversy centred on a Round One question which required St. Augustine’s College to mention the protective covering of the brain.
St. Augustine’s College answered “dura mater”, which was initially rejected, while Anlo SHS subsequently answered “meninges” as a bonus and was awarded the mark.
The ruling later became the subject of further protests and reconsideration, contributing to a prolonged disagreement during the contest. Anlo SHS challenged the handling of the matter before the final round could be completed.
Anlo SHS and Kumasi High School eventually walked off the stage, leaving St. Augustine’s College as the only team remaining. St. Augustine’s was subsequently declared winner based on the scores at the end of Round Four and qualified for the quarter-finals.
ANSSOSA said the matter is now being pursued through the appropriate channels, with the school authorities, coordinators and other stakeholders actively involved in efforts to resolve it.
The Association has meanwhile appealed to old students to remain calm and avoid confrontation, speculation and divisive commentary while the petition is being considered.
“We must rally our support behind our dedicated contestants, the coordinators, the management of ANSECO and the old students who are contributing to the ongoing efforts,” the statement said.
ANSSOSA expressed confidence that the appropriate authorities would consider the concerns raised and ensure that fairness and due process prevail.
