Teachers in some basic schools in Accra have returned to the classroom following the suspension of a two-week nationwide strike over outstanding allowances and promotion-related salary arrears.
The resumption follows a directive from the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) asking members to return to work on Monday, October 12, 2026.
The industrial action, which began on September 28, disrupted teaching and learning activities in public basic schools as teacher unions demanded action on outstanding conditions of service and salary-related concerns.
According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), teachers at some schools in Accra had resumed their duties, with academic activities gradually returning to normal.
At the Adenta Community School, teachers were supervising pupils as they cleaned the school compound in preparation for the resumption of regular academic activities.
Teaching and learning had also resumed at the Mantse Tackie Tawiah Cluster of Schools in Adabraka when GNA visited the school.
Meanwhile, some schools are making arrangements to recover instructional time lost during the industrial action.
The Headmaster of Liberty Avenue 1 and 4 Basic School, Wellington Akwetey Amanor, disclosed that the school planned to organise additional lessons in the early mornings and late afternoons to help pupils catch up on missed academic work.
The proposed extra classes are expected to provide pupils with additional learning time following the disruption to the academic calendar.
The suspension of the strike comes after engagements between the government and teacher unions over outstanding promotion arrears, allowances and conditions of service.
With teachers returning to their classrooms, attention is now expected to shift towards recovering lost instructional time and ensuring that pupils continue their academic work without further disruption.
