The government has announced plans to establish an expanded state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) institution in Bolgatanga as part of efforts to improve access to quality education and strengthen STEM training in the country.
Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced the plan during President John Dramani Mahama’s Citizens Engagement in the Upper East Region.
The proposed institution forms part of government’s broader efforts to expand educational infrastructure and provide students with opportunities to acquire science, technology and other skills needed for further education and the changing world of work.
Mr Iddrisu also announced plans for the construction of special-needs education schools in Ho in the Volta Region and Sunyani in the Bono Region.
The proposed schools are expected to expand access to appropriate educational facilities for learners with special educational needs as part of efforts to promote inclusive education.
The Education Minister further disclosed that work is set to commence on regional libraries in the Volta and Ahafo Regions, expanding access to library and learning facilities in the two regions.
The announcements formed part of a series of development interventions outlined during President Mahama’s engagement with residents of the Upper East Region.
President Mahama identified job creation and expanded economic opportunities for young people as key priorities of his administration following efforts to stabilise the economy.
The planned educational projects are expected to contribute to government’s efforts to improve access to education, strengthen STEM learning and expand educational opportunities for students across the country.
