The Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) has appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, as its new Chair, marking a major international recognition of her leadership in higher education and global research collaboration.
In a statement announcing the appointment, WUN said Professor Amfo brings “a combination of scholarly excellence, institutional leadership and a strong commitment to the role of universities in addressing global challenges.”
The Network said her appointment reflects both the diversity of its membership and its long-standing commitment to international collaboration in higher education and research.
Professor Amfo takes over the role after serving as Vice-Chair of WUN, where she helped to strengthen collaboration among member universities and advance shared research priorities.
Commenting on her appointment, Professor Amfo described WUN as a key platform for advancing global research partnerships.
“WUN is an engine for global research collaboration. I am looking forward to working with the new Executive Director, Professor Dawn Freshwater, to strengthen our collaborations and achieve greater impact,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of inclusive global partnerships, especially between institutions in the Global North and Global South.
“One of our Network’s strengths is its Global North-Global South connectedness. This ensures that our research collaborations reflect the full breadth of global expertise and experience,” she stated.
Professor Amfo further stressed that stronger cooperation among universities is essential in addressing today’s complex global challenges.
“We must work together for maximum impact as our communities confront challenges that collaborative research must solve,” she added.
She succeeds Professor Bill Flanagan, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Alberta, Canada, who served as the immediate past Chair of the Network.
The appointment is expected to further raise the profile of both Professor Amfo and the University of Ghana on the global academic stage.
It also reflects growing recognition of the University of Ghana’s expanding role in international research, academic collaboration and solutions-driven scholarship.
The Worldwide Universities Network is made up of 24 research-intensive universities across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America, and works to advance global research, student engagement and capacity-building on issues of international importance.
