The University of Ghana has suspended lectures and urged students and staff to remain indoors following heavy rains and flooding across parts of Accra on Friday morning.
In separate notices posted on its official Facebook page, the University advised members of its community to prioritise their safety as adverse weather conditions continued to affect movement.
The Academic Affairs Directorate (AAD) directed students to stay wherever they were and avoid travelling until conditions improve.
“Stay indoors wherever you are now; in your hall, at home or current location. Do not attempt to come for lectures or travel until the rains and flooding subside,” the notice stated.
The Directorate added that all lectures have been suspended until the situation improves.
In a separate safety alert to staff, the University said the wellbeing of employees remained its highest priority in light of the ongoing heavy rains and reports of flooding in several areas.
The notice strongly advised staff to remain at their current locations and avoid attempting to travel through flooded roads.
Supervisors were also asked to check on members of their teams, provide guidance to affected staff and encourage compliance with safety protocols.
Staff were further encouraged to stay indoors, avoid moving through floodwaters, maintain communication with their supervisors and monitor updates from the University and relevant authorities.
The University said further guidance would be issued as the weather situation evolves and urged members of the University community to prioritise their safety and support one another during the period of severe weather.
It also advised anyone requiring urgent assistance to use the University’s established internal emergency contacts.
