A teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region has been arrested after a viral video allegedly showed him physically assaulting a female student on campus.
The incident, which has triggered public outrage, drew the attention of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the police after footage of the confrontation spread on social media.
The arrest was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of GES, Daniel Fenyi, who said the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate has begun investigations into the matter.
“The Nyinahin Catholic SHS teacher seen in the viral video fighting a female student has been arrested! The regional education directorate is investigating the matter. Full report to be submitted to HQ,” Mr Fenyi stated.
In a further update, he disclosed that the student involved had also been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.
“Student of Nyinahin Catholic SHS seen in viral video fighting with a teacher arrested with the teacher. Both are undergoing medical examination for any potential harm on themselves. Investigations continue,” he added.
The widely shared video appears to show a heated confrontation between the teacher and the student in the presence of other students and witnesses.
In the footage, the teacher is allegedly seen striking the student several times before reportedly lifting and throwing her to the ground, while people nearby plead with him to stop.
The exact cause of the confrontation has not yet been officially disclosed by either the school authorities or the Ghana Education Service. However, unconfirmed reports suggest the incident may have been linked to a disagreement over hostel fees.
GES says investigations are underway to establish the full facts and determine the appropriate action.
The case has renewed concerns over student safety, disciplinary procedures and professional conduct in Ghana’s schools.
