President John Dramani Mahama has launched Ghana’s electronic visa (e-Visa) portal and announced visa fee waivers for African passport holders travelling to the country for business and tourism.
The new digital platform is expected to simplify visa applications, reduce processing times, and improve access to Ghana while maintaining national security standards.
Speaking at the launch, President Mahama said the e-Visa system forms part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s immigration services through technology and improve the country’s engagement with the rest of the world.
He explained that although the application process has been digitised, all applicants will continue to undergo the necessary security checks and due diligence procedures.
As part of measures to promote continental integration, the President announced that African passport holders visiting Ghana for business or tourism will no longer pay visa fees.
According to him, the policy reflects Ghana’s commitment to strengthening African mobility and deepening regional cooperation.
President Mahama also outlined ongoing improvements at Ghana’s international airports aimed at enhancing passenger experience.
He disclosed that new 3D scanning systems are being installed at Terminals 2 and 3, which will allow passengers to keep laptops and liquids in their hand luggage during security screening.
The President further announced that additional screening equipment expected from August will eliminate the need for travellers to remove shoes and belts at security checkpoints.
He stressed that while government is making travel more convenient, Ghana will continue to maintain strong border security measures.
President Mahama said the reforms are part of a wider strategy to leverage technology to improve governance, modernise border management, strengthen national security, and position Ghana as a welcoming destination for Africans and international visitors.
