Manchester United have officially secured qualification for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League after a 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, confirming a top-five Premier League finish.
The result moved United to 64 points, enough to make qualification certain because sixth-placed Bournemouth can no longer catch them with only three matches left. The Premier League has already been awarded five Champions League places for next season.
United sealed the win in dramatic fashion after Kobbie Mainoo scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute. Michael Carrick’s side had earlier gone 2-0 up through Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko before Liverpool fought back to level through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo.
The qualification marks a major step forward for United after missing out on European football this season. Their last Champions League campaign came in 2023/24, when they were eliminated in the group stage.
Carrick has been strongly linked with the manager’s job after overseeing United’s rise up the table, but no official announcement has yet been made on who will lead the club into next season’s Champions League campaign.
