The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has marked World Press Freedom Day 2026 with a call on journalists and media practitioners to use artificial intelligence responsibly while protecting press freedom and media integrity.
In a press statement signed by the President of PRINPAG and issued on May 3, the Association said it was commemorating the day under the sub-theme, “Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Safeguarding Press Freedom and Media Integrity.”
The statement said the growing use of artificial intelligence in journalism presents both opportunities and risks, and called on media practitioners to ensure that accuracy, fairness and human editorial judgment remain central to their work.
According to the statement, while AI can improve innovation, efficiency and access to information, it can also fuel misinformation, manipulation and ethical concerns if not properly managed.
The statement also commended members of the Association for what it described as their resilience, professionalism and commitment to ethical journalism over the years.
It said journalists continue to play a vital role in strengthening democracy by informing the public, educating citizens and holding leadership accountable.
PRINPAG urged its members to continue offering objective, balanced and constructive criticism of leadership across all sectors without fear or favour.
“We commend our members for their remarkable resilience and professionalism over the years. Even in the face of evolving challenges—economic pressures, technological disruption, and threats to press freedom—you have remained committed to the truth,” the statement said.
The statement further urged journalists to remain hopeful and continue contributing to Ghana’s democracy.
“As we navigate the age of artificial intelligence, I urge all members to continue supporting Ghana’s democracy in your own small ways, both individually and collectively. Let your voices remain strong, your criticism objective, and your hope unshaken,” the statement said.
It added that the National Executive Committee of PRINPAG is working to improve the welfare of members through advocacy, partnerships and capacity-building programmes.
The statement acknowledged the challenges facing media practitioners, including economic difficulties, safety concerns and the fast-changing technological environment.
It, however, assured members that efforts are being made to strengthen the sustainability of the journalism profession in Ghana.
PRINPAG also called on journalists to renew their commitment to press freedom, ethical standards and the responsible use of emerging technologies in order to preserve the integrity of journalism in Ghana.
