Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku says Ghana will host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, a move that could give a major boost to youth football in the country.
Mr Okraku made the announcement in a Facebook post on Sunday, April 26, 2026, saying Ghana had secured the right to stage the tournament. At the time of writing, a separate formal announcement from the Confederation of African Football was not immediately visible in the sources reviewed.
If confirmed through the tournament’s organising structures, it would mark Ghana’s first time hosting the competition since 1999, when the country staged the event under its former name, the African Youth Championship. Ghana has remained one of the strongest sides in the competition over the years, including winning the U-20 continental title in 2021.
The hosting opportunity is expected to support youth football development in Ghana, especially in areas such as academy growth, player preparation, and competition infrastructure. It could also push improvements in stadium readiness, training centres, and match organisation ahead of the tournament.
The decision is also likely to be seen as a strong vote of confidence in Ghana’s ability to host major football events, while giving the Black Satellites the chance to compete on home soil in front of local fans.
For Ghanaian football, the development would carry both sporting and symbolic value, coming at a time when attention is growing on rebuilding youth structures and creating clearer pathways for young talent.
More details are expected in the coming days on venues, preparations, and the official hosting process.
