The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has awarded a GHS400 million contract for the procurement of medical equipment for the new teaching hospital at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The investment is expected to support the establishment of a modern teaching hospital that will strengthen medical training, research and specialised healthcare delivery.
The project forms part of government’s broader effort to improve tertiary education and healthcare infrastructure, while positioning public universities to provide world-class training and services.
When completed and fully equipped, the KNUST Teaching Hospital is expected to serve as a major centre for clinical training, advanced medical research and specialised treatment.
The facility will provide practical training opportunities for medical students and health professionals, support innovation in key medical fields, and improve access to quality healthcare in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
The intervention is also being seen as part of government’s push to develop leading public universities into centres of excellence that combine academic learning with practical service delivery.
GETFund praised the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his role in pushing for the project.
As Chancellor of KNUST, he is said to have consistently advocated the need for a dedicated teaching hospital to support medical education and healthcare delivery.
The Fund also commended the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, for her role in helping to advance the project.
Stakeholders in the education and health sectors have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step towards improving healthcare infrastructure and building Ghana’s human resource capacity in medicine.
The project is expected to boost the university’s ability to train more medical professionals while responding to growing demand for specialised healthcare services in the country.
