The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to step aside pending investigations into the fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.
The directive follows a major fire incident at the facility, which disrupted power transmission and worsened electricity supply challenges in parts of the country.
The fire affected critical control systems at the Akosombo installation and has been linked to the recent unstable power situation, with several areas experiencing prolonged outages.
Authorities say investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire and determine the extent of damage caused to the infrastructure.
The decision to ask the GRIDCo CEO to step aside is intended to allow for what officials describe as an independent and transparent investigation into the incident.
In a related development, there has also been a major leadership shake-up at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.
The changes are understood to be part of efforts to improve operational efficiency and strengthen power distribution at a time of growing pressure on the energy sector.
The developments come amid rising public concern over the reliability of electricity supply, as homes and businesses continue to feel the impact of the outages.
The Minister is expected to provide further details at a press briefing scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
The briefing is expected to address recent developments in electricity distribution, ongoing interventions and measures being taken to stabilise the national grid.
Government has assured the public of its commitment to restoring stable power supply and dealing with the issues behind the disruptions.
