The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily closed the Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P.) Schools in the Yendi Municipality following a violent attack on the school premises by armed men.
According to a statement issued by the Service on Friday, July 10, 2026, the incident occurred on Thursday, July 9, after a disagreement between some community members and school authorities over an attempt to erect a commercial shed on the school premises.
GES said preliminary findings indicated that some community members fired multiple warning shots into the air during the confrontation.
The Headmaster of Zohe E.P. Junior High School, Mohammed Shani Gazali, was also assaulted during the incident. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment and later discharged.
Although no casualties were recorded, GES said the incident caused significant panic, disrupted academic activities and resulted in the vandalisation of some school property.
The matter has since been reported to the police for investigation.
GES said the schools had been temporarily closed to protect students and staff while engagements with relevant stakeholders continue.
The Service indicated that the schools are expected to reopen on Monday, July 13, subject to security clearance.
GES condemned the attack and warned that violence against students, teachers and other members of the school community would not be tolerated.
“Management condemns such act of vandalism in the strongest terms, and warns that any attack on members of the school community, including staff and student, and acts that render the school environment unsafe for teaching and learning, shall not be tolerated,” the statement signed by GES Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, said.
The Service assured parents, guardians, staff and the public that the safety and security of students and staff remained its highest priority.
