The Governing Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has appointed Christian Agyare as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University.
His appointment takes effect from August 1, 2026, following approval at the University’s 292nd Special Governing Council meeting held on May 13, 2026.
Professor Agyare will succeed Rita Akosua Dickson, whose four-year tenure ends on July 31, 2026.
13th Vice-Chancellor of KNUST
The appointment makes Professor Agyare the 13th Vice-Chancellor in the history of KNUST since the University was established in 1951.
Currently serving as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, he brings over 25 years of academic, research and administrative experience at the University.
Internationally Recognised Researcher
A Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Professor Agyare is internationally recognised for his work in:
- Antimicrobial resistance
- Ethnopharmacology
- Wound healing
- Anticancer drug discovery
His academic contributions include more than 200 peer-reviewed publications with thousands of citations in international journals.
Academic and International Experience
Professor Agyare obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy degrees at KNUST before pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Münster in Germany.
He later undertook postdoctoral and research work in the United States, including at Novartis/Seeding Labs in Boston and the University of California, San Francisco.
Over the years, he has secured more than $11 million in international research funding from organisations including the German Research Foundation, DAAD, the Mastercard Foundation and the World Bank.
Leadership and Innovation at KNUST
Professor Agyare has played major leadership roles in institutional planning and quality assurance reforms at KNUST.
Between 2016 and 2020, while heading the University’s Quality Assurance and Planning Unit, he led the introduction of digital systems to improve accountability, staff appraisal and academic supervision.
One of the major innovations introduced under his leadership was a multipurpose smart ID card system integrating biometric verification, access control and financial transaction functions for staff and students.
As Provost since 2020, he has overseen the introduction of new academic programmes, increased student enrolment and major infrastructure projects.
Advocate for Mentorship and Inclusion
Beyond academia, Professor Agyare is known for promoting mentorship and gender inclusion in science and research.
He is a Fellow of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Foundation and has consistently advocated greater opportunities for female researchers and graduate students.
Personal Background
A former student of Prempeh College, Professor Agyare is also a practising pharmacist and active member of the Methodist Church Ghana.
He is married to Charlotte Sena Agyare and they have three children.
