Staff of Fidelity Bank’s Oyarifa branch in Accra were left impressed on Monday, April 27, when an unemployed graduate returned GH¢4,000 he found at the bank’s ATM.
Emmanuel Appiah Boateng said he had gone to the bank on Saturday, April 25, to withdraw money with his wife’s ATM card for family needs when he discovered the cash left in the machine’s tray.
The father of four, who has been unemployed for nine months, said he was faced with a difficult choice at a time of financial hardship, but decided to do the right thing.
“I immediately called the Fidelity helpline to report it,” he said.
According to him, he had earlier visited another nearby branch, only to find the ATM there out of service. He then decided to try the Oyarifa machine, where he unexpectedly found the money.
Emmanuel, who holds a master’s degree in cybersecurity, a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, and a certification in project management, said he followed the bank’s instructions and kept the money safely over the weekend.
On Monday, he returned the full amount to the bank.
The branch manager praised his action and described it as rare.
“Your decision comes at a time when many households are grappling with the rising cost of living, making your honesty even more striking,” the manager said.
Emmanuel, an old student of Opoku Ware School, also shared the experience with colleagues at his church, Faith Life Family Assemblies of God at Oyarifa Gravel Pit in Accra.
His action has been widely seen as a strong example of honesty and integrity, especially at a time when many people are facing economic difficulties.
