A total of 23,367 teachers under the Ghana Education Service (GES) are yet to have their promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears processed, despite payments being made to 56,003 teachers.
The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, providing an update on the payment of outstanding promotion arrears to teachers.
According to the Department, GES submitted the necessary documents for 56,633 teachers, out of which 56,003 were successfully verified and paid.
However, the payments of another 630 teachers remain outstanding due to discrepancies identified during the verification process.
“The remaining 23,367 teachers are yet to be processed and relevant documents submitted by GES,” the statement said.
CAGD explained that the 630 cases could only be processed after GES had addressed the issues identified in their documentation.
“CAGD awaits the resolution of these issues by GES for the payments to be effected,” it stated.
The Department further disclosed that 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15 alongside their October salaries, while an additional 6,278 teachers had already been paid in September.
The payments cover promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears effective January 1, 2026.
CAGD assured affected teachers that outstanding payments would be processed once GES submitted the required documents or corrected the discrepancies in the records already provided.
“The Department remains committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the necessary corrections are made or complete and accurate documents are received,” the statement added.
The development follows the recent nationwide strike by three pre-tertiary teacher unions over unpaid promotion arrears and other conditions-of-service concerns.
The unions, comprising the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), suspended their industrial action on October 9, 2026, following an agreement with the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
Under the agreed payment arrangement, arrears for approximately 51,000 teachers were expected to be paid by October 16, while the remaining payments were scheduled for completion by the end of October.
With 23,367 teachers still awaiting the submission and processing of their records, attention now turns to GES to complete the outstanding documentation to enable CAGD to process the remaining eligible payments.
