GES Releases 2023 Capitation Grant Arrears, Orders Immediate Payment to Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the 2023 Capitation Grant arrears and ordered the immediate transfer of the funds to basic schools ahead of the reopening of the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year.

In a letter signed by the Deputy Director-General for Management Services, Prof. Smile Dzisi, on behalf of the Director-General, GES said the arrears had been transferred to the accounts of the various District Education Directorates for onward disbursement to schools.

“Management of Ghana Education Service wishes to inform you that Capitation Grant arrears for 2023 has been transferred to the various accounts of the District Education Directorates for onward disbursement to the schools,” the letter stated.

The letter, dated September 14, 2026, and addressed to all Regional Directors of Education, directed them to ensure that the funds reach the schools on or before reopening.

“Regional Directors are therefore by this letter requested to ensure that the funds are transferred to the schools on or before the reopening of the 1st term 2026/2027 academic year to enable Heads of Basic Schools operate seamlessly,” GES directed.

The Service explained that the funds transferred to the District Education Directorates also include the Sports and Culture component for District Offices.

“Funds transfer to the District Account includes the Sports and Culture component for District Offices. However, the Regional (Sports and Culture) components have been transferred to the various designated accounts of the Regional offices,” the letter said.

GES has also announced plans to monitor the disbursement of the funds to ensure that they reach the schools as directed.

According to the Service, a team from its headquarters will visit the regions to monitor the transfer of the funds.

“Kindly take note that a team from the Headquarters will be going to the regions for monitoring so please ensure that the funds are transferred to the schools immediately,” GES stated.

The Service said it is counting on Regional Directors to ensure the directive is carried out and the funds are made available to basic schools ahead of reopening.
