The Ministry of Education has strongly condemned the violent incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) that left the school’s headmaster seriously injured and led to the indefinite closure of the school.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, on Wednesday, August 5, the Ministry described the incident as criminal, reprehensible and unacceptable, stressing that acts of violence have no place in Ghana’s educational institutions.
“The Ministry unequivocally condemns the violent incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.”
It added:
“The Ministry considers this act of violence and lawlessness as reprehensible and criminal. Such conduct has no place within Ghana’s educational institutions and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
The Ministry’s response follows reports of a violent disturbance at the school after students allegedly attacked the headmaster over unverified claims linking him to the burial of a foetus on the school campus.
The incident resulted in the indefinite closure of the school, extensive damage to school property and the arrest of six students, while police continue investigations into both the assault and the allegations that triggered the unrest.
The Ministry disclosed that the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate the incident and take disciplinary action against those found culpable.
“The Honourable Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately take up the matter, commence a full investigation into the disturbance, and apply the appropriate disciplinary sanctions against all persons found culpable, in accordance with the laws and regulations governing the education sector.”
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring discipline, safety and respect for the rule of law in schools, urging students to use appropriate grievance resolution mechanisms instead of resorting to violence.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the Ghana Education Service is expected to announce further arrangements regarding the affected students and the reopening of the school.
