Three teacher unions have given the government a 48-hour ultimatum to address outstanding issues concerning the implementation of 2025 promotion placements and payment of arrears to affected teachers.
The unions — the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and PRETAG — have set midday Thursday, September 24, 2026, as the deadline for the government to resolve the issues.
The ultimatum was contained in an urgent notice dated Tuesday, September 22, 2026, jointly signed by Thomas T. Musah, General Secretary of GNAT; Jacob Anaba, President of NAGRAT; and King Ali Awudu, President of PRETAG.
According to the unions, the 2025 promotion placements and corresponding arrears have not been fully effected despite an agreement reached with the government.
“It has come to the attention of the Teacher Unions that the 2025 promotion placement, together with the payment of arrears, have not been fully effected,” the notice stated.
The unions said the development was in violation of an agreement with the government to automatically place all affected teachers by the end of September 2026.
They described the situation as disturbing and disappointing, adding that it had generated further tension and anger among teachers across the country.
Beyond the promotion placements and arrears, the unions also raised concerns about other outstanding issues, including the renewal of the Collective Agreement and the payment of Deprived Area Allowance.
The unions warned that failure to address the concerns by the Thursday deadline could trigger further action by teachers.
“We hereby serve notice that if by mid-day, Thursday, 24th September, 2026, all the issues are not addressed, the Teacher Unions will not be able to restrain the teachers anymore and whatever happens, the duty bearers should take full responsibility. This is not a threat but a promise,” the notice said.
The unions have meanwhile called on teachers to remain calm and follow official directives from their leadership.
They also urged teachers to participate in any actions that may be announced by their union leaders if the outstanding issues are not resolved.
