The Ghana Education Service (GES) has closed Obuasi Senior High Technical School (Obuasi SHTS) indefinitely following violent disturbances on campus in which students allegedly attacked the school’s headmaster over claims that he had buried a baby on the school premises.
The decision was announced by the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, after the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, left the headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria, with serious injuries and resulted in damage to school property.
According to reports, Mr Zakaria sustained severe head injuries, including a suspected skull fracture, after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of students armed with cutlasses. He was initially treated at the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for specialist medical care.
Reports indicate that the unrest began between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. after a student claimed to have seen the headmaster’s vehicle near the school’s refuse dump. The student allegedly raised an alarm, leading other students to the area, where they believed a newborn baby had been buried.
The allegation quickly sparked unrest on campus, with some students reportedly attacking the headmaster. Reports also indicate that some first-year students were assaulted after being accused by senior students of supporting him.
Following the incident, armed police officers were deployed to the school to restore order and maintain security.
The Municipal Chief Executive subsequently announced the indefinite closure of the school to restore calm and allow investigations to continue without further disruption.
Reports indicate that six students have been arrested in connection with the violence, while three staff bungalows were vandalised during the disturbances.
Police have commenced investigations into both the alleged burial of the baby and the attack on the headmaster to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The Ghana Education Service is expected to announce further arrangements for students affected by the closure once the security situation has been assessed.
