The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced the temporary shutdown of the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations following severe flooding caused by heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
In a joint press release issued on Monday, June 29, the two power utilities said the precautionary measure was necessary to protect lives, safeguard critical electricity infrastructure and prevent damage to the national power network.
According to the statement, flooding has affected key electricity infrastructure at several substations, posing significant risks to electrical equipment and operational personnel.
“As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, it has become necessary to temporarily shut down power supply from the affected facilities,” the statement said.
GRIDCo and ECG explained that the affected substations would remain offline until conditions are safe for power to be restored.
The two institutions noted that they are continuously monitoring the situation and assessing the impact of the flooding on the transmission and distribution network.
They also cautioned that power supply could be interrupted in other affected areas if necessary to protect lives, property and critical electricity infrastructure.
Members of the public have been urged to exercise extreme caution and immediately report fallen electricity poles, exposed or fallen power lines, flooded electrical installations and other electricity-related hazards to the nearest ECG office or through the company’s customer service channels.
The utilities said prompt reporting would support rapid response efforts and help ensure public safety.
GRIDCo and ECG apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outages and appealed to customers for patience, assuring the public that every effort would be made to restore power supply as soon as weather conditions improve and it is safe to do so.
