Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed sadness over the death of Innocentia Avinu, a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and has directed authorities to work with the police to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 14, the Ministry of Education said it had received with deep sadness reports of the student’s death at a beach in Cape Coast.
The Minister subsequently directed the management of UCC to collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.
“The Honourable Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the authorities of the University of Cape Coast to collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to commence a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death,” the statement said.
The directive comes after UCC and the police confirmed the recovery of the body of Innocentia Avinu, a Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student, at the Hatchland Beach area near Duakor in Cape Coast.
Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing, while a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death.
The Ministry extended its condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire University community.

The Education Minister also urged the public to allow investigators to carry out their work without interference and avoid circulating unverified information that could undermine the investigative process.
The death of the UCC student has generated widespread concern among students and the public, with many calling for answers regarding the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
