The University of Ghana has launched the UG Alumni Network App, a new digital platform designed to connect thousands of Legon graduates across the world and strengthen lifelong engagement with the University.
Launching the platform, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo described the initiative as a major step towards building a more connected, interactive, and vibrant global alumni community.
According to her, while alumni have traditionally relied on informal communication channels such as WhatsApp groups to stay in touch, those platforms often limit broader engagement and networking opportunities.
“Informal channels like WhatsApp groups are useful. They are immediate and they serve our alumni communities well. But they are also fragmented,” she said.
Professor Amfo explained that the new app provides a centralised platform where alumni can register, verify their status, update their profiles, and reconnect with former classmates, year groups, alumni associations, and chapters across the globe.
She noted that the platform enables graduates to search for fellow alumni by graduation year, college, profession, or location, making it easier to maintain personal and professional relationships regardless of where they live.
“The platform allows alumni to search for fellow Legonites by year of graduation, college or location, making it possible to find the person you studied beside 40 years ago or the colleague who graduated the year after you and is now working in the same city abroad,” she explained.
The Vice-Chancellor urged alumni to actively embrace the platform and contribute to the growth and development of the University community.
She encouraged graduates to reconnect with classmates, join alumni chapters, mentor current students, share their experiences, and support university initiatives.
“The University of Ghana is asking you to register on the UGA Network App, update your profile, reconnect with your classmates and your year group members. Find the alumni chapter nearest to where you live. Offer to mentor a student. Share your story. Support this initiative,” she said.
Professor Amfo noted that being a Legonite extends beyond graduation, describing the University of Ghana experience as one that shapes critical thinking, lifelong friendships, and a shared identity that continues to open doors around the world.
She expressed optimism that the app would deepen the University’s relationship with its graduates while fostering a stronger sense of belonging among alumni worldwide.
The launch forms part of the University’s broader efforts to leverage technology to strengthen alumni engagement and build a lifelong network of Legon graduates across different countries and generations.
