The Tema Presbytery of the Global Evangelical Church has called on the government to develop irrigation systems along the Volta Lake to support year-round farming, especially the production of tomatoes and onions.
The call was made at the 2026 Presbytery Representative Conference held at Hope Chapel in Sakumono Estates under the theme, “Preach Christ and His Second Coming.”
Speaking at the event, the Tema Presbytery Chairman, Rev. Jedidiah Azumah, said Ghana has enough water resources to support large-scale farming if they are properly used.
He explained that many communities around the Volta enclave are already involved in vegetable farming but depend mainly on small, self-financed irrigation methods.
According to him, government investment in large-scale irrigation infrastructure would increase production, create jobs for young people and help Ghana export more vegetables.
“Government intervention with large-scale irrigation infrastructure would significantly boost production, create employment for the youth, and position Ghana to export produce to other countries,” Rev. Azumah said.
He added that increased local production would also reduce the need for traders to travel to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso to buy vegetables.
Rev. Azumah said that situation remains risky, especially in view of recent security concerns in the sub-region.
Beyond agriculture, he also commended President John Dramani Mahama and the government for what he described as a firm position on LGBTQ+ issues.
On the spiritual side of the conference, Rev. Azumah urged pastors to focus on intentional discipleship and the spiritual growth of their members.
He encouraged ministers to organise regular discipleship classes and help believers build a stronger relationship with Christ.
He also advised pastors to depend on the Holy Spirit in their ministry, saying that although tools such as artificial intelligence can support preaching, true impact comes from spiritually inspired messages.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Stephen Senyo Sapati, a Board Member of the Bank of Ghana, reminded ministers of their responsibility to faithfully preach the Word of God.
Referring to 2 Timothy 4:1–2, Dr Sapati said ministers must stay alert, diligent and committed to sound doctrine.
“Ministers must remain rooted in the Word of God and be prepared at all times to preach, correct, rebuke, and encourage with patience and sound doctrine,” he said.
The Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, Right Rev. Samuel Dzomeku, praised the Tema Presbytery for its commitment to church planting and support for new congregations.
