President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of an interconnecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at Accra International Airport, marking the start of a major expansion project aimed at reducing congestion and improving passenger movement.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama said the project is a strategic investment in the future of Ghana’s aviation sector and the wider economy.
He explained that the expansion is necessary to improve efficiency, enhance passenger experience and support the country’s growing role as a regional air transport hub.
According to the President, passenger traffic at the airport has increased steadily from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, showing Ghana’s rising connectivity and growing appeal as a travel destination.
He noted, however, that the increase in traffic has also placed pressure on airport operations, especially during peak hours, with congestion affecting service delivery.

President Mahama said the new concourse is expected to address some of these challenges by making movement between the two terminals easier and more efficient.
When completed, the facility will include modern passenger boarding bridges, upgraded waiting areas, VIP lounges, retail outlets and other service infrastructure.
The project is expected to strengthen airport operations and improve the overall travel experience for passengers using the facility.
The sod-cutting forms part of broader efforts to modernise Accra International Airport and reinforce Ghana’s position as a leading aviation gateway in West Africa.
