The Minister for Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to withdraw its earlier communications on post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities.
The directive affects letters issued by GTEC on September 30 and October 1, 2025, concerning the engagement of Academic Senior Members beyond retirement age.
The decision follows a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), which had raised concerns over the policy direction.
In a statement signed by the Minister’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry said the withdrawal is to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders in the tertiary education sector.
“The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the statement said.
The Ministry explained that the move is temporary and intended to create room for a more inclusive process that will lead to an acceptable and sustainable policy.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and dialogue in handling matters affecting universities and other tertiary institutions.
The development is expected to calm tensions in the sector, especially after concerns raised by UTAG over GTEC’s role in matters relating to university appointments and administration.
The latest decision comes at a time of growing debate over governance and regulation in Ghana’s tertiary education system.
