Two lecturers of the University for Development Studies are set to receive $45,400 each from the Jacobs Foundation to support research on how children learn in different contexts.
The lecturers are Prof. Maxwell Nyatsikor, an Associate Professor of Inclusive Education and Pedagogy, and Dr Christian Evadzi, a Lecturer in Guidance and Counselling, both from the Department of Educational Foundations Studies.
The funding follows their selection into the Jacobs Foundation’s Leverage Empower Advance Research Network (LEARN) Programme, where they were chosen among 11 scholars from Ghana for the first intake.
The two-year programme aims to build advanced research skills in child development, psychometrics and longitudinal research through seminars, workshops and mentorship.
As part of the programme, the two UDS scholars will take part in the LEVANTE Conference in Marbach, Germany, from June 3 to 5, 2026.
The conference will bring together researchers from different countries to study how children grow, learn and develop in different social and cultural settings.
A major part of the conference will be the joint development of research proposals on learning variability.
Working with international experts and fellow researchers, Prof. Nyatsikor and Dr Evadzi will help develop proposals based on the LEVANTE Child Development framework and the Jacobs Foundation Research Agenda.
Their projects will then receive funding, with each scholar expected to receive $45,400 to support the research.
The development has been described as a major achievement for the lecturers and for UDS, as it highlights the university’s growing strength in education and human development research.
The research is expected to contribute to a better understanding of how learning differs across settings and how education systems can respond to the needs of different learners.
The achievement also adds to the growing international visibility of Ghanaian scholars in global academic research.
