The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has reaffirmed its leadership in traditional and integrative medicine during the West Africa Natural Health & Wellness Expo 2026, held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
The high-profile event brought together international exhibitors, exporters, researchers, regulators and wellness leaders from Ghana, India and across the West African sub-region to explore opportunities in natural health, traditional medicine and wellness innovation.
UHAS participated in the Expo as an Institutional Partner through its Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM), highlighting the University’s commitment to advancing evidence-based traditional, complementary and integrative medicine (TCIM).
As part of the opening ceremony, the Director of ITAM, Professor Kwame Benoit Nguessan Banga, delivered a keynote presentation on the theme “The Importance of Traditional Medicine and Modern Science.”

In his address, he emphasised the need to strengthen scientific research and regulatory systems in the development of traditional medicine.
He stressed the importance of rigorous scientific validation, strong regulatory compliance, sustainable conservation of medicinal plants and enhanced Ghana–India collaboration in traditional and integrative medicine.
UHAS noted that its participation in the Expo aligns with its broader mandate to support the natural health industry through applied research, laboratory and analytical services, professional training and policy engagement.
The University indicated that by strengthening collaboration between academia, industry and regulators, ITAM continues to position UHAS as a national and regional hub for integrative health innovation.
The Expo was graced by the Deputy Minister of Health, Hon. Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, who served as the Guest of Honour.
Her presence underscored the growing recognition of traditional and integrative medicine as an important component of Ghana’s evolving healthcare delivery system.
Organisers noted that the strong participation of government officials, international partners and industry stakeholders reflects increasing momentum toward the development of safe, effective and evidence-based natural health systems in Ghana and across West Africa.
