The University of Ghana has removed degree classifications from its public graduation portal following concerns over student privacy, the Director of Academic Affairs, Lydia Nyarko-Danquah, has confirmed.
The decision comes after advocacy by Radio Univers and formal complaints from some graduating students, who petitioned the University’s academic management about the public visibility of their degree classifications.
Speaking to Univers News, Mrs Nyarko-Danquah explained that degree classifications will no longer be publicly displayed on the graduation portal. Instead, they will be accessible only to graduands through their individual student portals during the graduation registration process.
“Students’ classes were exposed on the graduation portal, and we realised that this was a privacy issue. We decided to take off the classes, and this will be the practice going forward. Students will be able to view their classifications only when they log into the system to register. The classes will not be publicly displayed for anyone to check,” she stated.
According to her, the University’s decision was informed by feedback received through Radio Univers and aligns with broader efforts to enhance the privacy and protection of students’ personal academic information.
The University of Ghana has traditionally published graduation lists online, including degree classifications, allowing the general public to view academic outcomes. However, management now considers this practice inconsistent with contemporary expectations of data privacy.
The move has sparked public debate, with some stakeholders praising the University for prioritising student privacy, while others argue that degree classifications are a matter of public academic record.
University authorities say the new policy will apply to future graduation cycles, as the institution continues to review its academic and data governance practices.
