Ghana is set to deploy Google-powered artificial intelligence (AI) education tools in local languages including Twi, Ewe and Dagbani, as part of efforts to expand access to quality education and promote digital inclusion, the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced.
The minister disclosed this after engaging the Vice President of Google at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom, where discussions centred on improving learning outcomes in Ghana and across Africa.
“Yesterday, I had a fruitful engagement with the Vice President of Google, where ideas were shared to improve quality education in Ghana and Africa as a whole,” Hon. Iddrisu said in a Facebook post on Friday, January 23, 2026.

The initiative forms part of Google’s US$37 million investment in artificial intelligence research and digital skills development across Africa and includes the development of speech recognition and AI tools tailored to Ghanaian languages. The tools will focus on non-standard speech to improve accessibility for learners using digital platforms.
Mr Iddrisu said the ministry is also pushing for the inclusion of Hausa, a language widely spoken across Ghana and West Africa, to enhance regional integration and broaden access to AI-powered educational resources.
“I emphasised the importance of including Hausa,” he said, noting that the move would “deepen regional inclusion and further strengthen Ghana’s leadership as an AI innovation hub on the continent.”
The education minister further revealed that Google has assured the government that its education tools will be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis, allowing students and teachers to access curriculum-aligned content and resources on the responsible use of AI without incurring data costs.
The partnership involves collaboration with the University of Ghana and the GDI Hub to advance AI research in local languages, reinforcing Ghana’s position as a leader in inclusive digital education.
“Ghana is not just participating in the AI revolution; we are helping to shape it for Africa,” Hon. Iddrisu said.
