The University of Ghana (UG) Debate Team has clinched gold in the Open Debate Category at the 2025 Pan African Universities Debate Championships (PAUDC), held at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
This victory reinforces UG’s dominance in African public speaking and debate. Rising above 107 teams from 56 institutions across 11 African countries, the UG team delivered a standout performance marked by sharp reasoning, eloquence and exceptional teamwork. Their success reflects the University’s commitment to developing confident, articulate leaders equipped with strong critical-thinking and communication skills.
The team was accompanied by Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, whose mentorship and encouragement bolstered their journey. The UG Sports and Wellness Directorate, which oversees the team’s preparation, also played a key role in strengthening their training for the continental contest.
This win adds to UG’s strong legacy in Pan-African academic competitions, further cementing its position as a hub for intellectual excellence.
Following the victory, the team expressed gratitude to their coaches, mentors and the University leadership for their steadfast support. Their achievement serves as an inspiration to current and prospective students aiming to excel both academically and beyond the classroom.
In South Africa, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, visited the team, congratulating them on their outstanding performance and urging them to continue upholding UG’s values as global ambassadors of excellence.
