Registration has officially opened for the maiden Godwin Adukpo Hill Challenge, a 10-kilometre road race aimed at identifying and nurturing grassroots athletics talent in the Volta Region.
The event, scheduled for September 26, 2026, will bring together elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts, students and amateur runners in a competition designed to discover promising long- and short-distance runners while promoting healthy lifestyles.
According to GBC Online, the race is the brainchild of Godwin Atsu Adukpo, a former national athlete and four-time Milo Marathon champion, who hopes to create opportunities for young athletes from the Volta Region to showcase their potential.

Speaking on the motivation behind the initiative, Adukpo said, as quoted by GBC Online, “I’m organizing this challenge to inspire the next generation of athletes from the Volta Region, and to help them fulfil their dreams.”
The race will cover a 10-kilometre route beginning with a 7-kilometre run through parts of Ho before participants take on the final 3-kilometre uphill climb to Galenkui/Kabakaba Hill (TV Pole), a popular training ground for fitness enthusiasts.
Project Lead of the Godwin Adukpo Hill Challenge, Miss Tilda Elinam Acorlor, said the route has been carefully designed to test participants’ endurance while showcasing one of the region’s well-known fitness destinations.
“We will start with a marked 7km route through the Ho township to give participants a feel of the community, before the final 3km challenge up Kabakaba Hill,” she said, as quoted by GBC Online.
She added that the organisers hope the event will help identify talented athletes who regularly train in the area but have not had opportunities to compete.
“On weekends we see a lot of people use that route to keep fit. We know talented athletes are among them. They just haven’t been identified intentionally. That is why the Godwin Adukpo Hill Challenge is here to help unearth the athletic talents in them,” Miss Acorlor said, as quoted by GBC Online.
Beyond the race, organisers plan to hold community engagement activities, health screening exercises and mentorship sessions for school athletes.
They also expect the event to contribute to sports tourism and local economic activity in the Volta Region.
“We are hopeful the event will boost sports tourism in the Volta Region and draw more attention to Kabakaba Hill,” Miss Acorlor added, as quoted by GBC Online.
Registration, which opened on August 1, 2026, is open to participants in the elite male and female, junior, and mass participation categories.
Organisers have encouraged schools, keep-fit clubs, corporate organisations, security services and individual athletes to register for the competition. Further details on prizes, safety measures and the official race route will be announced on the Godwin Adukpo Hill Challenge social media platforms ahead of the event.
