The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old suspect, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, the Level 200 University of Cape Coast (UCC) student whose death shocked the university community.
The suspect was arrested on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following sustained intelligence-led operations.
According to a police statement, preliminary investigations revealed that on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave.
Police said he subsequently drove her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her body was later discovered.
The arrest comes days after the death of the Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student prompted investigations by the Ghana Police Service, the University of Cape Coast, and the Ministry of Education.
The Police indicated that investigations into the case are ongoing and assured the public that further updates would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
