Veteran Nollywood actor Solomon Akiyesi has died after a brief illness, throwing the Nigerian film industry into mourning. The death was confirmed by the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Yakub Abubakar.
According to Mr Abubakar, the actor complained of chest pain the night before his death and was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with an ulcer and given medication. He later returned home to rest, but did not wake up the following morning.
“His wife tried to wake him around 4 a.m., but he did not respond,” Mr Abubakar said. He described the actor’s death as a major loss to the industry. Reports said Akiyesi died in Abuja and his body has been deposited in a morgue there.
Colleagues and admirers have since taken to social media to mourn him and celebrate his contribution to Nollywood. Actress Celestina Dovigalle was among those who paid tribute, describing him as lively and full of energy.
Akiyesi was known for roles in films including Desperate Ladies, Pretty Liars, Heart of a Saint, Marry Who You Love, Gen Z Wife and Accidentally Us. He reportedly featured in more than 100 films and built a reputation as both an actor and producer.
A native of Ososo in Edo State, Akiyesi began his acting career in the late 1990s and remained a familiar face in the Nigerian film industry for decades. His death marks another painful loss for Nollywood.
