The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has held negotiations with the leadership of three pre-tertiary teacher unions in an effort to resolve outstanding concerns over their collective agreement and conditions of service.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, comes amid a nationwide strike declared by the unions, which began on September 28, 2026.
The unions involved are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
The negotiations, held at the FWSC headquarters, were chaired by the Commission’s Chief Executive, Dr George Smith-Graham.
Also present were GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah, NAGRAT President Jacob Anaba and PRETAG President King Awudu Ali, alongside other union executives.
The meeting focused on outstanding demands raised by the unions, particularly issues relating to their collective agreement and conditions of service.
However, the discussions ended without a final agreement, with the Commission indicating that further consultations would be required before negotiations could continue.
Speaking after the meeting, Dr Smith-Graham explained that the FWSC would engage relevant stakeholders to consider the unions’ demands before reconvening the negotiations.
He also commended the union leadership for the peaceful manner in which the discussions were conducted.
The latest engagement follows an emergency meeting convened by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu on September 28, the day the nationwide strike commenced.
Following that meeting, the Minister announced that the FWSC would lead formal negotiations with the unions on behalf of the government.
“The FWSC will meet with the unions on Tuesday to continue detailed discussions on their collective agreement and conditions of service,” he said.
Meanwhile, the government has appealed to the three teacher unions to suspend their strike to create a favourable environment for continued negotiations.
The FWSC is expected to reconvene discussions with the union leadership after completing its consultations, although no specific date has been announced.
