The University of Ghana (UG) has clarified that students admitted to the then African University College of Communications (AUCC) during the 2022/2023 academic year are eligible to receive certificates issued under the seal of the University of Ghana, provided they satisfy all academic requirements.
The clarification follows a petition by affected Level 400 students seeking clarity over the processing and issuance of their degree certificates.
AUCC, now known as the African University of Communication and Business (AUCB), was operating under an affiliation arrangement with the University of Ghana when the affected students were admitted.
In its response to the students, signed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Gordon A. Awandare, UG explained that students admitted under the affiliation arrangement remain governed by the terms and conditions of that arrangement throughout their programmes.
The University consequently stated that students admitted during the 2022/2023 academic year who successfully complete their academic requirements are entitled to certificates bearing the University of Ghana’s seal.
“Students admitted during the 2022/2023 academic year who satisfy all academic requirements shall be eligible for the award of certificates issued under the seal of the University of Ghana,” the University stated.
The affected students have welcomed the clarification, saying it supports their position that they remain entitled to certification under the affiliation arrangement that existed when they enrolled.
According to the students, their admission, academic records, examination arrangements and other institutional processes were undertaken within the framework of AUCC’s affiliation with the University of Ghana.
They argued that the issue goes beyond the name appearing on their certificates and concerns the academic terms and expectations under which they accepted admission and pursued their programmes.
The students maintained that replacing University of Ghana certificates with AUCB degrees for their cohort would depart from the affiliation framework under which they were admitted.
They said they were not seeking a special concession but the fulfilment of the academic arrangements that applied to them throughout their studies.
The affected students have meanwhile urged their colleagues to remain calm and united as they await further communication from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) following their petition.
“We encourage all affected students to remain focused and not fall for misleading narratives. We are pursuing the matter through the appropriate channels and remain committed to ensuring that our legitimate academic rights are protected,” the students said.
