The Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, has received the maiden Meritorious Award of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in recognition of her contribution to quality assurance and leadership in tertiary education.
The award was presented during GTEC’s 2026 Summer School and Meritorious Awards, held at the Great Hall of KNUST in Kumasi on July 9 and 10, 2026.
The two-day event was held on the theme, “Quality Assurance in Higher Education: Leveraging Technology to Safeguard Education Quality Amid Rising Student Enrolment.”
The annual Summer School, which began in 2024, brings together leaders of tertiary education institutions and other key stakeholders to discuss critical issues affecting higher education delivery in Ghana.
The 2026 edition, the third since its establishment, focused on how tertiary institutions can use technology to maintain academic standards and improve quality assurance systems as student enrolment continues to increase.
This year’s programme also featured the introduction of the GTEC Meritorious Awards, an initiative aimed at recognising excellence in leadership and innovation within Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
Prof. Dickson received the maiden award for her leadership and efforts towards promoting quality education at KNUST.
Receiving the award, she dedicated the recognition to the entire KNUST community and expressed appreciation to the Director-General of GTEC and participants at the conference.
The Summer School provided a platform for tertiary education leaders to exchange ideas and explore strategies for using technology to improve teaching, learning, institutional management and quality assurance across Ghana’s higher education system.
