A 17-year-old final-year student of Mfantsipim Senior High School in Cape Coast has died by suicide, the Central Regional Police Command has confirmed.
The deceased, identified as Emmanuel Arthur, was found in an uncompleted building at Ola North, a suburb of Cape Coast, after a carpenter working at the site alerted police to the discovery.
According to a police statement, officers responded to the report on June 11, 2026, and found the student’s body at the scene.
Investigators recovered a black backpack containing personal belongings, including a Geography Paper 1 mock examination paper bearing Emmanuel Arthur’s name, along with two mobile phones—an Android device and a feature phone.
Authorities at Mfantsipim Senior High School later confirmed that the deceased was a final-year student preparing for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The student’s parents were subsequently informed, and the body was conveyed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where a pathologist examined it. Police said the body had significantly decomposed before it was released to the family for burial.
The uncompleted building where the body was found was later fumigated.
Police say investigations have established that the student died by suicide. However, the circumstances that may have led to the incident are yet to be established.
The incident has left the school community and residents of Cape Coast in shock, with investigations continuing.
