As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, the tournament is facing an unexpected challenge in one of its host countries: winning the attention of the American public.
While the World Cup is regarded as the biggest sporting event on the planet, many sports fans in the United States remain focused on domestic competitions, particularly the ongoing NBA Finals.
On Wednesday night, wild celebrations erupted across New York City after the New York Knicks staged a dramatic comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Fans flooded the streets, climbed onto vehicles, and packed sports bars as the city celebrated the team’s success.
The scenes served as a reminder of the competition football faces in a country where basketball and American football continue to dominate the sporting landscape.
Despite the World Cup’s return to the United States for the first time since 1994, the tournament has yet to generate the level of excitement many expected.
Although there are visible signs of the competition in major cities, including World Cup branding on public transport, giant advertisements featuring football stars, and growing numbers of international supporters, many Americans remain preoccupied with local sports.
Several New York sports fans interviewed by international media admitted they had paid little attention to the tournament so far.
“To be honest, I haven’t really kept up with anything about the World Cup. I don’t care about anything other than the Knicks,” one fan said.
Another supporter said his focus remained entirely on basketball.
“I’ve been concentrating on my Knicks but once it’s over I will definitely turn my focus to the World Cup,” he said.
The lukewarm public interest comes despite expectations that hosting the tournament would significantly boost football’s popularity in the United States, as happened after the 1994 World Cup, which helped pave the way for the establishment and growth of Major League Soccer (MLS).
Analysts say factors such as expensive ticket prices, political debates surrounding the tournament, and competition from established American sports may have contributed to the slower build-up.
The United States is jointly hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico in what is expected to be the largest edition of the tournament in history.
Whether excitement grows as the competition progresses remains to be seen, but early indications suggest that football still faces stiff competition for attention in one of the world’s biggest sports markets.
